UPDATE: Report: Merkel says EU to make joint decision on N Stream-2

BERLIN, Sep 8 (PRIME) -- The decision on Russia's Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project will be made by entire Europe rather than Germany alone, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday at a meeting of the Christian Democratic Union / Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) faction in parliament, as cited by newswire dpa.

She said that since "(there has been no) assault on Germany, Germany must act as a country member of the E.U."

U.S. President Donald Trump said late on Monday that he will support suspension of Nord Stream-2 due to the suspected poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that the Kremlin sees no reason to start discussing any restrictions on the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project.

"This is a commercial international project … Why should they discuss any measures with a negative impact on the international project where German companies participate as well… It is unreasonable and there are no grounds to start speaking about this now," Peskov said.

The Nord Stream-2 project envisages construction of two lines of a natural gas pipeline with an annual capacity of up to 55 billion cubic meters, running from the Russian shore to Germany under the Baltic Sea. Russian gas giant Gazprom is implementing the project together with Germany’s E.ON and BASF, Royal Dutch Shell, OMV, and France’s Engie. The length of the pipeline’s route exceeds 1,200 kilometers.
